Pathankot

13 Dec

Introduction and things to do

The fact that we visit Pathankot is more accidental than anything else. It is, mainly, a transport junction which doesn't have other supposed attractives. So, theorically, this is going to be the least exciting of our trip destinations, and we must come (and sleep) here, because of the timing of our transports.

The city is strategically located next to the borders between Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and the sadly famous Kashmir, and this is basic to understand what makes it an important transport hub today.

Obviously, all this lack of expectations will probably mean that it will be a memorable visit!

Accomodation

We are not the first ones to discover that this city is specially used as a transition point between other different parts of India, and that's why around the train station this is a good offer of basic hotels for travellers. Even inside the train station itself there are some rest rooms that would be fantastic to be able to take, but are served on 'first come, first gets' basis, so we will see our luck.

Getting there and away

From Dharamsala we will have to take a bus, and there are many, til Pathankot, and it will take 3 hours. We will spend the night here because the train that we have to take to reach our next destination, which is Bikaner, already in Rajasthan, departs at 11 in the morning from Pathankot. So it looks more convenient to come here the night before and avoid to have to get up absurdly early and worry because the bus is, of course, running late.

This train to Bikaner will be our first important day train, and will get to our destination at 00.45 in the evening, after 13 hours and 700 kilometers, covering from the mountain areas of Himachal to the desert that covers the most of the Rajasthan.
