Introduction and things to do

Udaipur. They say that this is the most romantic city in India. If Jodhpur was the blue city, and Jaisalmer was the golden city, Udaipur is the white city, for its shiny buildings. And we can call it also the city of the lakes, because we can find as much as 4, in the middle or around the city centre. The most famous of them, the Lake Pichola, with its lake palace in the middle, built completely on marble and occupying the whole surface of a small island.

Almost in every city in Rajasthan there is at least a lake, but generally speaking they are not natural lakes. They have been built artificially as water reserves for the city, and from here is where they take the water they need for they daily use. We must thank them for the esthethic considerations!

This will be our second big stop in Rajasthan, this time for 4 days. Udaipur is not anymore in the middle of the desert, and they are even some little mountains around that give a humble shadow to the city.

City of palaces and lakes, then, and difficult to get to, will keep us busy for some days. Days that, casually, happens to be christmas. We are a bit curious on how this will be celebrated, here, being christianism not a specially popular religion in India, with just a 2% of followers. Anyway, I am sure that many western tourists will take the christmas holidays to visit the country and will help on somebody having prepared something.

Accomodation

In Udaipur, like in Jaisalmer, we will splurge ourselves, and we will spend our three nights in the Mewar Haveli, a relatively modern palace that boosts a privileged spot next to Lake Pichola. The price, however, is just around 200 NOK a night, which is quite a lot being India, but obviously is not much in western standards.

Getting there and away

If everything goes as planned, we will get into Udaipur around 5 o'clock in the morning, with the bus from Jodhpur. To leave, we will be back to our railway routine, taking the 21.35 train to Jaipur. It will mean that we will not stop in Pushkar, maybe one of the best known cities in Rajasthan, but 36 days looks like a lot, but quickly you realize that is not much, specially in a country with a huge number of attractives as India.
